3ph Insulated Industrial Roller Shutters

Our 3 phase insulated industrial roller shutters are designed to provide a robust, energy-efficient solution for warehouses, factories, and distribution environments where thermal performance and durability are essential.

Combining a high-performance insulated curtain with a heavy-duty direct drive system, these shutters help reduce heat loss, improve internal working conditions, and deliver reliable operation in demanding industrial settings.

Whether installed internally or externally, they offer an effective balance of security, insulation, and long-term performance. Explore examples of our completed projects.

Why Choose an Insulated Roller Shutter

An insulated industrial roller shutter offers a practical, cost-effective way to improve both the performance of your building and the working environment within it. By incorporating a twin-skin, foam-filled curtain, these doors are specifically designed to reduce heat transfer while maintaining the strength and security expected of an industrial shutter.

From an operational perspective, the benefits are immediate. Reduced heat loss helps lower energy consumption, particularly in facilities with frequent door usage or large openings. This not only supports cost savings but also contributes towards wider sustainability and carbon reduction targets.

In addition to thermal performance, insulated shutters provide noticeable improvements in internal comfort. They help stabilise internal temperatures, reduce cold draughts, and minimise the impact of external weather conditions—particularly important for loading bays and exposed elevations.

Noise reduction is another key advantage. The insulated curtain construction helps dampen sound transmission, making these shutters well suited to environments where noise control is important, whether to improve working conditions internally or to reduce sound breakout externally.

Finally, when compared with non-insulated shutters or alternative door types, an insulated roller shutter offers a strong combination of durability, security, and efficiency. It is a dependable solution for sites that require long-term performance without compromising on energy efficiency.

Thermal Performance (U-Value)

The insulated curtain is formed from twin-skin laths with a polyurethane core, designed to reduce heat transfer and improve internal temperature stability. U-value measures how effectively heat is prevented from passing through the material—the lower the value, the better the insulation. It should be noted that quoted figures relate to the curtain only, with overall door performance influenced by installation quality and sealing.

Key Performance Data:

  • Thermal performance to BS EN 10077-1:2006

  • All testing conducted by Exova Warrington APT Laboratories

  • Acoustic rating – 22dB

  • Thermal resistance – 1.1 (lath only)

  • Air permeability – 1.95 m³·h⁻¹·m⁻² @ 50Pa

  • Wind load – Class 5 (without wind endlocks)

  • Extremely lightweight – 11.99 kg/m²

Motor & Drive System (GfA)

The shutter is powered by a heavy-duty direct drive motor, designed specifically for industrial applications where reliability and longevity are essential. We utilise proven drive systems from GfA Elektromaten, widely regarded across the industry for their robustness and consistent performance.

Unlike lighter-duty solutions, a direct drive system eliminates the need for chains or secondary transmission components, resulting in smoother operation, reduced wear, and lower maintenance requirements over the life of the door. Integrated safety features, including a failsafe brake and precise digital limit control, ensure accurate positioning and safe operation at all times.

This type of motor is ideally suited to medium to high usage environments, providing dependable day-to-day performance while maintaining the strength needed to handle larger, insulated shutter curtains.

Safety Features

Safety is a fundamental consideration in the design of any powered industrial door, particularly where higher levels of automation are required. When a shutter is operated using automatic activation methods—such as radar sensors, induction loops or remote control—additional safety devices are essential to ensure safe operation without constant user control.

Unlike standard deadman (hold-to-run) operation, where the user maintains full control of the door movement, automated systems require integrated protection to prevent accidental contact with people, vehicles or equipment.

Our insulated roller shutters can be equipped with a comprehensive range of safety features, including:

  • Photoelectric safety beams to detect obstructions within the opening and prevent the door from closing when the area is not clear

  • Safety bottom edge which automatically stops and reverses the door upon contact

  • Integral safety brake within the motor to prevent uncontrolled descent in the event of failure

  • Manual override facility allowing safe operation during power interruption

  • Emergency stop options for immediate shutdown where required

In addition, vision panels can be incorporated within the shutter curtain to improve visibility through the opening, helping to reduce the risk of collision and enhancing overall site safety.

These features work together to ensure compliance with current safety expectations while providing confidence that the door can operate safely and reliably in busy industrial environments.

Finishes & Colour Options

As standard, our roller shutter laths are supplied in a galvanised steel finish, providing a durable and cost-effective base level of corrosion protection suitable for many internal and external applications.

PLASTISOL COATED FINISH

For enhanced durability and appearance, laths can be supplied with a Plastisol coating.

Plastisol is a factory-applied PVC-based coating, typically around 200 microns thick, which is bonded to the steel during manufacture. This creates a tough, flexible outer layer that offers:

  • Excellent resistance to weathering and corrosion

  • Increased durability compared to standard painted finishes

  • A consistent, attractive surface finish

  • Low maintenance over time

Plastisol is available in a range of standard colours (as shown), making it a popular choice where both performance and appearance are important. However, due to manufacturing constraints, colour availability can be more limited on larger shutter sizes, and certain colours may be subject to availability or minimum production runs.

POLYESTER POWDER COATING

For projects requiring a specific or branded colour, polyester powder coating offers complete flexibility.

This process involves applying a dry powder to the steel surface, which is then oven baked to create a hard, durable finish.

The key advantages are:

  • Virtually unlimited colour choice (full RAL spectrum)

  • Excellent colour consistency for branding or architectural matching

  • Strong resistance to fading and UV exposure

  • Suitable for both internal and external environments

Powder coating is typically applied after manufacture, allowing for a fully customised finish tailored to your exact requirements.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FINISH

  • Galvanised – practical, cost-effective protection

  • Plastisol – durable, factory-finished coating in a range of standard colours

  • Powder Coated – fully bespoke colour options for complete design flexibility

  •

Choosing the right finish allows you to balance durability, appearance and cost — ensuring your shutter performs well and looks the part for years to come.

Product Comparison Overview

The comparison below highlights the key differences between a 3 phase insulated roller shutter, a standard 1 phase roller shutter, and a non-insulated roller shutter, helping to identify the most suitable solution.

The insulated 3 phase shutter stands out in overall performance. Its twin-skin, foam-filled lath construction improves thermal efficiency, reducing heat loss and maintaining a more stable internal environment—particularly beneficial for larger openings or frequently used doors.

It also delivers improved acoustic performance, reducing noise transmission and enhancing working conditions. Combined with its heavy-duty build and direct drive motor, it is well suited to demanding, higher usage environments.

By comparison, a standard 1 phase shutter offers more basic performance, with limited insulation and reduced durability. Non-insulated shutters, while suitable for security, provide no meaningful thermal or acoustic benefits.

Features such as vision panels and enhanced safety systems further strengthen the insulated option, particularly where visibility and automation are required.

Overall, the 3 phase insulated roller shutter provides the best balance of performance, durability, safety, and long-term value.
