Understanding Wind Resistance (Pa) vs Real-World Wind Speed

Wind resistance for high speed doors is measured in Pascals (Pa), which represents pressure applied to the door during controlled testing (in accordance with EN standards). This differs from real-world wind speed, which is typically measured in mph or m/s.

While there is a relationship between pressure and wind speed, it is important to note that laboratory test conditions and real-life environments are not directly equivalent.

Key Guidance

  • 300 Pa (Class 1) ≈ Light wind exposure (approx. 30–40 mph gusts)

  • 450 Pa (Class 2) ≈ Moderate wind conditions (approx. 40–50 mph gusts)

  • 700 Pa (Class 3) ≈ Strong winds / exposed sites (approx. 50–60 mph gusts)

  • 1000+ Pa (Class 4–5) ≈ Very high wind loads / severe exposure

Important Considerations

  • Wind pressure in testing is uniform and controlled, whereas real wind is gusting, turbulent, and variable

  • Building location, height, and surrounding structures significantly affect actual wind loads

  • Openings in exposed areas (e.g. loading bays) can experience higher localised pressures than forecast wind speeds suggest

  • Door design (e.g. ZIP systems, reinforcement, guides) plays a critical role in real-world performance

👉 For this reason, wind class ratings should be used as a comparative performance guide, not a direct conversion to site wind speed.
